Market Math
Spotlighting math and technology in a Farmers' Market using
Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle (ELC)
Purpose of the Project
The intent of this research and capstone project is to spotlight learning and teaching strategies that focus on math and technology (such as simulations)
during a middle school farmers' market. The suggested practices are based on some or all of the four components of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle.
Research Question
How can math and technology, such as simulations and technological sources, be spotlighted in preparation for a Middle School farmers’ market? What are some practical applications that may facilitate attributes of Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle (ELC) through concrete experiences (EC), reflective observation (RO), abstract conceptualization (AC), and active experimentation (AE)?

Forms of Technology
Augmented Reality (AR)
Augmented reality (AR) refers to technology that blends components of the real-world with digitized contextualized information (Azuma, 1997; Azuma et al. 2007 as cited in Bujak et al, 2013; Sommerauer & Müller, 2014).
Simulations
Simulations are characterized to manipulate variables in a virtual environment (Wilson, 2016), create situations that can test hypothesized situations through representation to reflect real phenomena (Clark et al., 2009), and offer a dynamic, interactive and visualized learning experience (Plass et al., 2009).

Land Achknowledgements
The intended Middle School Farmers Market is located on the ancestral, unceded territory of the Katzie, the Kwantlen, and Stó:lō First Nation. As a community, we value the opportunity to learn, live, play, and share educational experiences on this traditional land. We are committed to building strong meaningful relationships and positive partnerships with all the traditional keepers and stewards of this land.

Hi! My name is Christina and thank you for stopping by. This year, I am stepping in as the Coordinator of Educational Technology at Meadowridge School in Maple Ridge, BC. In past years, I taught MYP Math, Science, and DP Biology, and coached girls volleyball both in school and on club teams.
My joys stem from being outdoors and exploring the beauty that surrounds us. There is so much to learn from the land we have been blessed with. Many of my adventures are joined by my dog, Jax, who motivates me to push forward and embrace challenges along the way.
This capstone project would not have been possible without key people. It is with the deepest gratitude, I thank Dr. Cynthia Nicol for her guidance and encouragement over these past two years. I gained the confidence to divulge my curiosity and explore ideas well outside of my comfort zone. Dr. Tim Waddington, Dr. Susan Gerofsky, Dr. Everton Jacinto, and Dr. Tathali Urueta offered valuable feedback along the way. They posed insightful questions that challenged my understanding and philosophy as an educator. Lastly, I would like to thank my husband, Dallas, for his patience and support during this ongoing learning process.
